Reducing the Odor from Sewers – City of Barcelona, Spain

Context

− 1.6 million people are living in Barcelona
− The city is placed in Northern Spain – with a surface area of 102,2 km2
− Barcelona has initiated many smart city projects such as Zero Emissions Mobility, Open Data portal
− It is divided into 10 administrative districts, each one with its own district council, which allows a decentralised, local administration, closer to the residents
− The Open Data project has 281 available resources and working to bring in many more
− In order to improve lives of citizens, the city is working to integrate urban planning, ecology, and information technology

Description of the challenge

− The challenge of reducing the odor from sewers, which has become an increasing problem for citizens.
− Bad odors generate citizens’ complaints and may have different origins: solid waste, emissions, sewers, etc. In the last few years citizen’s sensibility to this problem has increased, especially in the case of sewer smell.
− The solution should be a general approach that public managers can use and they are looking for sensor technologies and self-cleaning drain
